Today, I’m proposing that you help choose my route across Australia. At the end of this newsletter, I have included a poll for our first decision. My aim is to craft the entire journey through these mini decisions, offering an immersive experience across the various territories. To my knowledge, a trip like this hasn't been done before, maybe there is a good reason for that. To me it sounds fun and exciting but there are also a few ways that I can see it going wrong.
We would wake up each morning without a pre-determined route, unvalidated but brimming with surprise. Maybe someone finds some coordinates up ahead that need exploring, or maybe someone can point me towards a safe place to sleep and a warm shower. Additionally, tapping into the wisdom of those familiar with Australia could prove invaluable. Hopefully we get the most interesting path forward at any crossroads by making it a democratic decision.
The idea involves updating the map nightly by marking down waypoints. Each morning brings new directions for the day ahead. No longer bound by pre-approved routes or meticulous planning, it feels as though we're collectively uncovering Australia.
I propose two rules for the venture: 1) The route must have opportunities for internet access. 2) Distances should be manageable in a typical day of riding, maybe 80-100 kilometers. Beyond these rules, the journey remains open-ended. I've spent several days overlaying Telstra cell phone coverage on Google Maps. Then marking Perth and Sydney and dropping arrows 1-4 for the first decision.
So, which direction do we head on day one? That's where you come in. I'm leaving the choice in your capable hands. Below, you'll find four options departing from Perth. Take a look at the map, consider the possibilities, and cast your vote. And remember, disregard any inkling of my own preference—I want this decision to be entirely yours.
After you vote I’d love to hear your thoughts on the idea. Is it good, bad, or really bad. Feel free to poke holes in it, are there any other guard rails needed to keep this train on the tracks?
Thank you, as always, for your support and feedback.
